It's in the nature of being me, I suppose, that I go looking for a gender-neutral version of "inamorata" before thinking of "sweetheart."

Also? Word does not know the word hermaphroditism. Neither, of course, does Firefox spellcheck.

I owe people both questions and answers on the interview meme.

I'll get to it this week.

Now is the time to throw your hat in the ring and ask for more questions.

It's nice out today, for all that the January thaw waited to show up until well into February.

We walked down to the coffee store from some coffee, beer, cocoa, and honey - almost too warm for a coat, by the end - and I have a pizza dough rising in the oven.

Good day. Almost feels like a real week-end.

Remember that apartment on Averill where the furnace was glitchy and the attic wasn't insulated? And that '99 blizzard that shut down the city when we were living there?

Yeah. It's colder than that in here.

I should not have found the "read all archives" feature on comics.com.

That being said... this sounds like a fun character concept.

Thinking of making a new concept for Requiem. Not really having any fun with Leora.

Been bantering with elasmo about a Mekhet, based in part on Nyx and in part on Silence... and in part on the Grey Lady concept I've been playing with for a while.

Secondary bonus? I already have a costume, discernibly different from Leora's. Now all I need is a cheap, cheap source for 6-12 yards of grey gauze fabric.

Darn Wal-mart getting rid of their $1/yard bins...

Sometimes "ideal outfit" changes with what the stores actually have that fits well.

I went shopping at the Outlet Center with my mom today - my Christmas present, interview/new job clothes for the job I hope to get soon, with the added hope that I'd find the perfect skirt for Leora (my Requiem character), something that could go from job to game.

I'd been planning on black. What I ended up with is green plaid and, if the Dragon's dislike of this skirt works like it did with the burgundy pants I've been wearing to play Lirrianna, then everyone else should love it.

Now all I need is tights. :-)

A wonderfully good Christmas, despite everything. I drove home on clear, dry roads to Rochester (right to the road my parents live on, which was icy and snow-covered).

I spent a few hours at home, in the warm and the sunshine, while my "new kid brother," the lab-collie almost-not-a-puppy Wyatt.. helped.

Funny how much being home can uplift my mood... especially at Christmastime.

Also... molasses cookies & lebkuchens taste like the holidays. They taste like happy.

I find it funny how, as we get closer to Christmas, the gender ratio of shoppers at Bon*Ton shifts more & more towards the male.

Monday seemed to be father-child bonding day. I remember (and miss) doing that with my father, down in Brockport at all the little shops, picking out gifts for my mom. When I was rather young, we'd then go over to the house in Clarkson, my father's mother's father's house, so my dad's sisters could wrap gifts.

They probably weren't really simpler times... but sometimes I still miss them. I guess everyone who actually grows up sometimes wished they could go back.

J/J/Steve, you didn't get robbed by someone who stole your rapier and your red feather, did you? (I mean, the red feather is something I own, anyway, so I'm not sure why it was in your closet in my dream). That was all dream, right?

Strange, odd, or interesting things I did yesterday:

Installed a button fly on my velour pants on which the zipper has been only somewhat functional since I bought them 4 or 5 years ago. Works like a charm.

Tea-dyed paper for my letterpress class final project. Dyed my cuticles, as well.

Volunteered to work an extra 45 minutes at Job @.

Today, we went to the Commons in freeeezing cold and did a little holiday shopping. Got some stuff for us, some stuff for others.

Now, it's enchilada time, then more tea dying, and then some world building.

Tomorrow: 8 - 3 or 5, 5:45 - 9:15

As always, I find that what I'm most grateful for are people - I'm a little in awe of the love that surrounds me, and the encouragement, the prodding or help up when I need it.

I'm more than a little in awe of that fact that I still have my darling husband, and there are simply not words for how grateful I am for that.

And I am thankful that, for all its flaws, I live in a place where I do indeed have the freedom to do and say as I wish, for the most part, in a place and life where being a little bit broke will still see a turkey on the table this Thursday.

You know, when I was 12, 13, and they were in their late teens, early twenties, New Kids on the Block didn't seem so creepy.

20 years later? 38-or-so men singing in falsetto "I can be your boyfriend?"

Damn creepy.

Also: you know you're out of touch when you need Google to understand the jokes at the award shows.

Me: "who's he?"

Sam: "I don't know - one of the good guys?"

Me: "Err?"

Sam: "He's wearing a white hat."

Feeling much better, albeit a little bit exhausted. Thanks for the support through the week of crazies.

Life is good. My only real lack - besides material lacks, and those are only nominally important - is attention. *smirk* I either need 50% more roleplay or 100% more feedback on my writing.

The weather is chill, crisp, but not horribly unpleasant. I have an 11-lb turkey in my work freezer & another one in our home freezer, and I'm looking forward to Thanksgiving.

I don't really have one. A holiday wish list, that is. Sort of.

I'm down to wanting stuff that's either too involved in personal taste to pick out for me, or stuff too expensive for me to ask anyone to buy for me.

'Cause, really, I want costuming for the Requiem character I have yet to figure out, beautiful clothes for work, and a blender. A really nice blender. And, seeing as I work at Bon*Ton now, I'm probably going to buy myself the blender.

I want a house, too, and a new car. Yeah, not in the range of gifts.

And I want a good, solid, real Christmas. Carols, and friends, and a tree, and good food.

That all being said. There is an Amazon list. There are three yarn sites I love. And I will pry a list out of Sam. But, more importantly - what do you want? Because the part I like the most about the holiday if watching people like the gifts we bought them.

Okay, Pratchett fans! (I'm looking at you, eseme! None of the others I know regularly read my journal anymore.) I need your help.

In reading Tanechigai's post, I was reminded of a bit in a Pratchett book, a Vimes bit, about Indi- Klatchian food in Ameri- Ankh-Morpork, the difference between the stuff they served to their families and to Ankian.. um.. citizens of Ankh-Morpork.

Ringing a bell to anyone?

Where does this perception come from that November is winter?

I mean, I know that there have been times in NY where we've had serious snowfall in November, even in October (and, of course, as late as April & May), but a 60 degree day in early November doesn't seem like it should be cause for alarm and consternation (That being said, the average high and low for November in Rochester are 32.6°F & 47.2°F).

I know it's kind of silly to go by the equinoxes and solstices - there's still nice days after Sept. 22, and plenty of horrid days after mid-March - but I think that a week of nice, crisp autumn air in early November is a blessing, not something to whine about.

unum: Your snail mail address, should you choose to share such with us. E-mail it to me at aldersprig at gmail dot com if you're shy.

dos: Do you wish to exchange presents with us this holiday season? Do we have a location and time to do so? (I still have presents for 4 or 5 people in my closet from last year...)

This weekend helped even things out more than a bit. I have antibiotics, which dealt with the miserable-horrible-sick. I took a walk in the rain, which gave me a long moment of happy.

Seriously. Saturday, with the air crisp but not unpleasant, the rain falling but not pounding, the colours clear and bright in the trees - that was what autumn is supposed to be like. Pumpkin pie and roasted pumpkin seeds, a warm dinner with a side of apple cider; that gave October a stay of execution.

Sunday gave it a pardon. Good friends, good roleplay, lots of hugs, lots of good autumnal food. I, despite being endlessly groggy, am in a far better mood today.

Good morning, everyone. Happy Autumn!
